By AccessWDUN Staff

Lanier Technical College hosted the state-wide SkillsUSA Automated Manufacturing Technology Competition on the Hall County campus Friday.

Team Lanier Tech competed with teams from Wiregrass Technical College in Valdosta, Chattahoochee Technical College in Marietta, and South Georgia Technical College in Americus. The 12 student competitors and their four teams will learn their results March 23 during the SkillsUSA State Competition.

The Skills USA Automated Manufacturing Technology competition consisted of students utilizing Computer Automated Drafting to construct part geometry, Computer Automated Machining to generate tool paths, and Computer Numerical Controls to machine the part. These tools and parts are utilized to run and maintain factory equipment and high tech, advanced assembly processes. AMT skills are in high demand in today’s high tech, advanced manufacturing environments.

The results from the AMT competition will also be announced at the State competition March 23. The gold medal winners will go on to represent Georgia in the national competition in Louisville, Kentucky.

Craig Taylor, Lanier Tech’s Precision Machining and Manufacturing Instructor and an experienced industry professional, noted that “Skills USA provides a platform for students to prove and improve their technical skills to employers prior to graduation, providing a resume-building opportunity as well as networking opportunities with students and practitioners both locally, regionally, and nationally.”
