A 13-year-old Duluth boy was killed when he and a friend were playing with a gun Wednesday afternoon.

Gwinnett County Police Department officers were called to the Portico Apartments on Preston Park Drive around 5:30 p.m. to investigate a shooting report.

"The caller said that a 13 year old male had been shot while he was playing with a gun with his friend," said Gwinnett Police Cpl. Wilbert Rundles in a press statement. "Officers responded and found the juvenile male, identified as Jair Gonzalez, bleeding heavily from a gunshot wound."

Rundles said the teen was rushed to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

"It was determined that Jair and his 14-year-old friend were at Jair’s apartment. They were playing with guns that were located in the apartment. The friend’s gun accidentally fired a shot and struck Jair," Rundles said.

Rundles said the friend has been charged as a juvenile with reckless conduct; his name is not being released.
