A Gainesville Police officer is out of a job after he was charged with aggravated assault Monday.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called to investigate on Thursday, after a formal complaint was filed Wednesday against Derek Evatt, 40, according to a press statement.
The complaint stemmed from an off-duty, domestic related issue that involved a minor in late 2017.
The GBI obtained an arrest warrant and Evatt was "released from his employment with the City of Gainesville," the press release stated. He is in the Hall County Jail.
“Although a sad and unfortunate situation, if an officer violates the law, they will face consequences. I, along with my administration, expect all officers to conduct themselves ethically, honestly and with integrity both on and off-duty," said Chief Jay Parrish in the release. “We do appreciate the complainant coming forward to seek our assistance in this matter. It is important for us to be as transparent as possible for the community we serve and protect. We have a partnership with the citizens of this community; therefore, processes are in place to ensure that confidence and public trust is maintained.”
Sgt. Kevin Holbrook said in an email that Evatt had been with the station for seven years.
