Chestatee offense outdone by Denmark's in 61-47 loss

By Nate Roys

GAINESVILLE — Chestatee showed on Friday that its offense will continue to score points in region play -- the problem for the War Eagles was Denmark's equally explosive offense.

The War Eagles battled throughout before falling in a marathon, 61-47 to the Danes in Gainesville.

The Danes (4-1, 1-0 Region 7-4A) sprinted out to a 34-13 halftime lead, but the War Eagles (1-4, 0-1) pulled within one score in the third quarter, 34-27 -- only to see Denmark reel off back-to-back touchdowns.

The Danes finished with 6 touchdown passes on the night -- and also scored twice on defense with a fumble return and interception return.

Chestatee had cut the lead to 34-20 on an 11-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Christian Charles to junior wide receiver Seth Pressley, one of their three connections in the end zone. Junior running back MJ Jarrard then banged in a five-yard run to pull within a score of the visitors -- only to see the Danes pull back away.

Charles finished the day 27 of 50 passing with 345 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions, while also running 27 times for 158 yards for one touchdown and one lost fumble. Pressley ended the game with 13 receptions for 213 yards and three touchdowns. Jarrard added nine rushing yards on six carries and one touchdown, and also caught two passes for five yards and one touchdown.

Despite Charles’, Pressley’s and Jarrard’s on offense, the War Eagles just could not stop the Denmark passing attack.

The Danes scored on a 21-yard pass from junior quarterback Ben Whitlock, as he found his junior wide receiver Ze’vian Capers for touchdown, one of their five touchdown connections on the night.

Whitlock and Capers hooked up for three touchdowns in the first half and two more touchdowns in the second half.

Whitlock threw 21-37 for 434 yards, six touchdowns and one interception. Capers caught the ball seven times for 142 yards and five touchdowns. The Dane’s sophomore wide receiver Teddy Davenport also hauled in six catches for 164 yards, and scored the game’s first touchdown on a 80-yard dime from Whitlock.

Denmark (4-1, 1-0) looks to keep its offense rolling as it hosts region opponent West Hall (1-4, 0-1) next week.

Chestatee hopes to have a better defensive performance next week when it hosts tough region foe, Marist (4-1, 1-0).
