MONTICELLO — Union County overcame some early missteps to notch a 38-22 win over Monticello on Friday in Monticello.
The Panthers (4-0, 1-0 Region 8-2A) overcame an interception and back-to-back fumbles as the Union County defense came up big to keep the Hurricanes (1-3, 0-1) off the scoreboard.
Pierson Allison responded to put the Panthers in front on a 17-yard touchdown run, and while Monitcello answered with its own score, the Hurricanes missed the point after attempt to trail 7-6.
Chad Buzzard and Allison then combined to give Union a 21-6 advantage that the Panthers held for a 24-14 lead at the half.
Then it was Monticello's turn for sloppy play, fumbling away back-to-back possessions in the third quarter. The Panthers took advantage via a 4-yard Buzzard TD run and then an 18-yard scoring run from Jonah Daniel for a 38-14 lead.
Union County will play host to Putnam County next week in Blairsville.
