U.S. Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) said Friday the city of Atlanta is "eroding public safety" by refusing to house federal immigration detainees in the city jail.
An executive order signed by Mayor Keisha Bottoms says refusing to house the detainees is the best way to demonstrate her administration's opposition to current "inhumane" national immigration policies.
Collins, a Gainesville Republican, is a member of the House Judiciary Committee, which has jurisdiction over immigration issues.
“Public officials should serve residents by following the law, not disregarding their responsibility to uphold it. State and local leaders who refuse to cooperate with federal law enforcement or keep criminals behind bars make innocent Georgians more vulnerable," he said. "When other states look to Atlanta, they should see a city anchored to promoting the welfare of its citizens, not eroding public safety.”
