Buford City Schools superintendent resigns amid allegations of using racial slurs

The superintendent of the Buford City School System, Dr. Geye Hamby, has resigned amid allegations that he used racist language while working at a job site.

In a letter Friday to the Buford School Board, Hamby offered his "sincere apologies for any actions that may have created adversity for this community and the Buford School District."

Hamby is accused of using the N-word in an audio recording that appeared in a lawsuit filed by a former employee, who claimed she was fired for racial discrimination.

On Wednesday, Hamby was placed on administrative leave, though it's unclear if anybody confirmed if Hamby was, in fact, the person speaking on the audio recording.

Attorney Gregory Jay, who is with the law firm that represents the Buford School Board, declined to offer additional comment on Hamby's resignation.

The board has a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, Aug. 27, though it's unclear if there are any immediate plans to name an interim superintendent, or launch a search for Hamby's replacement.

The story was first reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
