FLOWERY BRANCH — Whitefield Academy spoiled the opener for Cherokee Bluff in its inaugural season with a 33-0 win over the Bears Saturday night.
The Wolfpack used a 24-point first quarter to take control getting a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown from Myles Redding on the Bears' first possession just 57 seconds into the contest. Whitefield then got touchdown runs of 40 and 9 yards from Eric Little sandwiched around a 40-yard field goal by Matthew Sumlin.
Sumlin would add field goals of 44 and 21 yards in the second quarter and a 43-yarder in the fourth quarter.
The Wolfpack, who advanced to the second round of the Class A Private playoffs in 2017, offered more than a stiff challenge for Bears. The Whitefield defense held Cherokee Bluff to minus-17 yards rushing and zero total yards for the game.
Bears' quarterback Connor Boyd, making his first varsity start, was 4 of 9 for 17 yards passing. Whitefield piled up 208 yards of offense, with Little racking up 106 yards on the ground.
Cherokee Bluff (0-1) will take its first road trip next week traveling to fellow newcomer Denmark out of Forsyth County. It will be the season-opener and the first game ever for the Danes, who will play in Region 7-4A.
