Sweet redemption: Johnson busts streak at Oglethorpe County, 38-0

LEXINGTON — "Now maybe we can start talking about a new streak instead of the old one we heard so much about the past couple of weeks!"

With that Johnson football coach Jason Roquemore laid to rest the spectre of a 24-game losing skid and basked in the glow of his team's dominant, 38-0 win over Oglethorpe County on Friday in Lexington.

Roquemore's Knights buried the past emphatically, as quarterback Sam Corbett rolled up three rushing touchdowns and Garry Daies added two more scores on the ground.

"Hopefully this is a spring board to something," Roquemore said. "Our kids fight their tails off and to persevere through so much, so it's nice for them to reap what they sow. And hopefully this will give our kids some confidence as they head into next week. I'm anxious to see how this impacts the locker room. We'll press reset next week and come up with a good gameplan and take it from there."

It's a safe bet that plan -- for a showdown with rival West Hall in the "Battle of Oakwood" -- will include another healthy dose of Corbett, as the senior quarterback followed up a strong scrimmage with an even stronger opening night.

"I don't think (Corbett) gets the justice he deserves; he's a tough kid, and what he does alleviates so much pressure for our offense," Roquemore said. "He's a leader for this team, and he's fun to watch."

The Knights (1-0) travel to face the Spartans (0-1) next week.
