UNG's Sabol claims tournament title as women's golf finishes third

COLUMBUS — Sophomore Megan Sabol won the Lady Cougar Classic by 12 strokes as the University of North Georgia women's golf team claimed third place after the final round Tuesday.

Sabol shot nine-over for the 54-hole tournament, the second-best 54-hole score-to-par in program history. The Augusta, Georgia, native shot 72-77-76 to earn the low medalist spot in the 30-player field. Young Harris's Candler Kimsey finished in second place at 21-over-par.

As a team, the Nighthawks finished three strokes behind second-place Young Harris. USC Beaufort won the tournament, defeating the Mountain Lions by three shots. West Georgia and Columbus State completed the top five.

Karson Stone finished in 16th place, while Alexis Whitney earned a top-20 finish, ending in a tie for 19th.

The Nighthawks will next compete in the Wingate Bulldog Challenge, which begins on March 19.
