ELLIJAY — Lumpkin County swept a pair of games Saturday in the Diamond Days at Gilmer High School.
The Indians opened with a 5-3 victory over Gilmer and then got a 4-3 victory in 8 innings over White County with a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning.
In the first game, Lumpkin County (4-1) rallied from a 3-0 deficit with five runs over the final five innings. of the day. Gilmer scored twice in the first and once in the second to run out to the quick lead.
The Indians took the lead for good with four runs in the fourth inning. Logan Choflet, Dalton Stephens, Dalton Caldwell and Eli Wingo would all scored in the inning. Nick Turner singled one in on a hit and Jacob Martin and Braylen Chastain would produce runs on groundouts.
Dalton Stephens went three innings allowing three runs on eight hits for Lumpkin County. Austin Black earned the win in relief pitching two innings of scoreless ball and Matthew Grizzle retired the last six batters to earned the save.
In the second game, Dalton Stephens drew a walk with the bases loaded scoring Conner Pierce for the win.
White County led 2-0 before Lumpkin County scored three times in the sixth, highlighted by a two-run double from Dalton Stephens.
White County, however, tied it up in the seventh to force extra innings.
Matthew Grizzle allowed the tying run but earned the victory following the Indians' rally..
Connor McGuire took the loss for White County surrendered four runs on three hits over 2 2/3 innings striking out four.
Jacob Martin started the game for Lumpkin going four innings and allowing two runs on three hits and striking out one.
