Baseball: Lumpkin County, Chestatee take big wins

DAHLONEGA — Lumpkin County shutout Riverside Military Academy 10-0 in six innings Wednesday in both teams' season openers.

Junior southpaw Dalton Stephens senior righthander Austin Black combined to allow just Riverside one hit and walked just while fanning 10 hitters.

Jacob Martin belted a solo home run in the second to open the scoring. Martin, Logan Choflet, Nick Turner, Braylen Chastain, Matthew Grizzle, Conner Pierce, Dalton Stephens and Harris Taylor all collected hits.

The Indians will play host to Gilmer on Thursday.

Riverside will hold its home-opener on Thursday against Tallulah Falls in both teams' Region 8-A openers.

Chestatee scored 13 first inning runs en route to the lopsided win.

The War Eages (2-0) batted around twice in the first inning and got help from several Johnson errors.

Chestatee got two hits and three RBI from Will Cantrell. Caleb Carter, Cooper Wilson, Christian Charles, Chris Ray, Reggie James, Storm Yarbrough, Benson Miller, and Micah Flanagan all had one hit for the War Eagles. Wilson, James, and Yarbrough all knocked in a pair of runs each.

Chestatee next will play host to Jackson County on Friday. Johsnon (0-1) will play host to Meadowcreek on Friday.
