Dawson County season comes to end at hands of Monroe Area

MONROE — After running over teams for much of the 2018 campaign Dawson County football ran into an opponent -- and a player -- it could not bulldoze on Friday.

Monroe Area quarterback Chandler Byron rushed 26 times for 224 yards and three scores to help lead the Purple Hurricanes to a 49-17 win over the Tigers in the Class 3A second round in Monroe.

“When you play a kid like Byron, he can make you look bad,” Dawson County football coach Sid Maxwell said. “We knew it was going to be a challenge. We got a few stops, but we couldn’t put together enough to keep his big-play potential from happening.”

Byron also completed 11 of 17 passes for 93 yards and two scores, while teammate Jakia Thompson added 64 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Monroe Area finished with 381 total yards.

Dawson County, meanwhile, put up 199 total yards -- 180 on the ground. Ahmad Kamara paced the Tigers (10-2) with 15 rushes for 167 yards and a score.

Dawson County's season is now complete.
