FLOWERY BRANCH — Flowery Branch football looks to be getting back on track at just the right time.
The Falcons won their second straight contest on Friday, fending off a determined Denmark team 28-19 on Friday to seal the No. 3 playoff seed from Region 7-4A and head into the postseason on the back of a two-game win streak.
The victories reveal a Branch team very much on the mend following two gut-wrenching -- and injury-laced -- losses to Blessed Trinity and Marist. The Falcons next travel to face Ridgeland in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs.
The Falcons (8-2) pounced on Friday for a 28-7 lead over a Danes team knowing it had to win to reach the postseason, getting scores from a number of sources to gain breathing room.
The visitors actually notched a 7-0 lead on a touchdown pass from quarterback Ben Whitlock. But the Branch fired back with four straight scores.
The defense kickstarted things for the Falcons, blocking a Denmark punt that Aiden Lorenz scooped up and returned for a touchdown at 7-7.
Jerzee Allentini then scored from a yard out before Connor Larson hauled in a 6-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-7 Flowery Branch at the half.
Chase Dial-Watson added a 9-yard touchdown run in the third quarter for a 28-7 advantage. Yet the Danes kept fighting and produced two unanswered scores -- but could get no closer than nine points before the Falcons held on for the win.
