Brenau University celebrates 140 years with surprise birthday party on front lawn

Brenau University Women's College students were surprised with a 140th birthday party Thursday afternoon.

The party was planned by Dr. Debra Dobkins, Dean of the Women's College. She kept the party a secret, having crews set up the fun and games on the front lawn while the students took part in the annual Grrrl PowHER Hour, an informal student convocation.

"We are celebrating our 140 year legacy of educating smart, capable and confident women, who have continued the spirit of sisterhood, contribution to the world," Dobkins told AccessWDUN at the event. "It's a little chilly out here today but we're out here on the lawn, having a blast."

Students enjoyed a variety of activities and treats and were encouraged to post on social media using the hashtags #BrenauDefiningMoments and #Brenau140.

The Competitive Cheer team, spirit cheer team, dance team, Tau Sigma Dance Fraternity and dance majors all performed routines; students sangs along with the fight song, alma mater and of course, a birthday song personalized by the Vocal Chamber Ensemble; campus radio station WBCX played popular songs through the decades while students played a variety of games, created art, took selfies and had cake, popsicles and popcorn.

Lastly, Dr. Dobkins surprised the crowd with a delayed class start time, gifting the students just a little longer to celebrate being a part of Breanu's 140 year history.

"It's just a great, joyful occasion and a wonderful way for us to commemorate Brenau's defining moments - 140 years of defining moments - and we're not through yet!"
