Softball playoffs: Jefferson, Banks notch opening wins; Buford falls to defending champions

COLUMBUS — Jefferson and Banks County both won their opening games Thursday in the double-elimination format portion of the girls state softball tournament at the Olympic Softball Complex.

Jefferson held off Cook County with a 2-0 victory in Class 3A. Banks County routed Harlem 7-0 in the Class 2A bracket.

Meanwhile, Buford lost 2-0 to defending state champion Locust Grove in the Class 5A tournament.

Jefferson and Banks County both will be back in action at 10:45 a.m. on Friday looking to advance to the semifinals. The Lady Dragons will take on Brantley County, which slipped by defending Class 3A state champion Calhoun with a 2-1 victory. Banks County will play Dodge County, which was a 12-2 winner over Heaerd County.

Buford drops into the loser's bracket and will play Villa Rica at 2:15 p.m. looking to stay alive.

For the Lady Wolves on Thursday, junior Ansleigh Hollifield was the tough-luck pitcher. Hollifield scattered fiive hits and struck out six but allowed both runs. Buford stranded four runners in scoring position. In the third inning the Lady Wolves had runners on first and scond with one out but could not score.
