Cherokee Bluff: Hall schools supt. issues update

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

Hall County Schools Supt. Will Schofield this week issued a progress report on the planned opening of Cherokee Bluff middle and high schools later this year.

Schofield's report, in the form of a letter to members of the South Hall community, can be found below

It covers such things as personnel for the two new schools, band and football equipment purchases, and the continuing process of determining which schools students in existing schools affected by redistricting will attend once the new schools open.

Most of these issues - such as the redistricting map - have already been approved and made public.

The two new schools are scheduled to open with the start of the 2018-19 school year in August.

Schofield's letter:

Greetings,

In a district of 28,000 students and 3,400 employees, it is rare that I have an opportunity to communicate directly with individual schools. However, with the opening of Cherokee Bluff Middle and High Schools on the near horizon, I wanted to take this opportunity to brief our South Hall communities about many of the exciting developments:

Experienced leaders have been hired for both Cherokee Bluff Middle School and High School. Mr. Wes McGee is the high school principal and Mr. Robert Wilson is the middle school principal. Both of these individuals bring a wealth of innovative practices and school governance experience to our district. In addition, Mr. Kenny Hill will serve as the athletic director for the Bluff.

Many key positions have been filled relating to the academic and extra-curricular programs. I will allow your principals to announce those individuals, but suffice it to say that an all-star cast is being assembled. Regular and advanced courses along with a full complement of extra-curricular activities will be offered at Cherokee Bluff.

Last night (Monday night), your Board of Education approved funding for Cherokee Bluff band equipment, uniforms and all necessary equipment for the football program.

We are in the process of ascertaining the preferences of re-districted, currently enrolled juniors and their parents to ensure that all rising fourth-year seniors (Class of 2019) have the opportunity to graduate from their school of choice.

Assistant Superintendent Kevin Bales is working to provide the necessary House Bill 251 transfer request forms for students who will not be fourth year seniors. At this time, it appears there will be a limited number of seats available at both Johnson and Flowery Branch High School. Preference will be given to rising juniors first. We are working on the details and expect to be communicating the process with parents of rising juniors by the end of January.

Siblings of rising seniors who will be in 9th, 10th or 11th grade next year will be granted enrollment in the same school as their senior brother or sister.

Rising 9th and 10th graders have been enrolled in their zoned high schools. We will continue to monitor capacity and will communicate with parents if available space should open up for House Bill 251 transfer requests in those grade levels.

While I would love to answer all questions individually, I encourage you to contact your local principal for your individual concerns or questions. They are in the best position to provide prompt and accurate information based upon your particular situation. Additionally, we will send out regular updates through your principals.
