The 5K and walk honoring slain hiker Meredith Emerson - Ella's Run - is set to end after it's 10th annual event this year.
Emerson's best friend Julia Karenbauer founded Right to Hike and the annual 5K honoring Emerson. She said on the Afternoon News Wrap Wednesday that the event was more than just a 5K run and walk. The funds raised go towards placing emergency phones along hiking trails in Georgia and also to the Meredith Emerson Scholarship at the University of Georgia.
Emerson was murdered on New Years Day in 2008 by a serial killer on a hiking trail in Dawson County. Authorities located her dog, Ella, in Cumming and eventually were able to find Emerson's body. Her killer, Gary Michael Hilton, pleaded guilty in her death and was sentenced to life in prison.
