It may be the lightest schedule of the season with just 14 high school football games set for northeast Georgia, but Friday (and Saturday) night certainly won't lack for punch with some monster showdowns on tap.
Buford's matchup with South Pointe (S.C.) may not have any playoff implications, but it pits two of the South's biggest powers against each other at Tom Riden Stadium. The Stallions (3-0) are ranked No. 1 in the Palmetto State and are also ranked No. 28 in MaxPreps and No. 8 in the USA Today national polls. The Wolves (2-0), meanwhile, are ranked No. 2 in Class AAAAA in Georgia and 95th overall in MaxPreps.
Class AAAA No. 5 Jefferson will play host to Flowery Branch and former coach Ben Hall at Memorial Stadium. The Dragons (2-1) are coming off a bye week after a gut-wrenching loss to Thomson while the undefeated Falcons (3-0) are the biggest suprise of the season already matching last year's entire win total. It also will showcase two of the area's best running backs in Jefferson's Colby Wood and the Falcons' Malik Damons.
Meanwhile, Class AAAAAA No. 9 Winder-Barrow (3-0) is ranked for the first time in years and will put its unbeaten streak on the line against a winless Loganville (0-3) squad that has won 13 of the 15 all-time meetings against the Bulldoggs.
Hurricane Irma forced the cancellation of one game when the East Jackson-Glynn Academy contest had to be called off after the Red Terrors were not able to get out of a ravaged Glynn County. The game was initially set for kickoff in Brunswick only to be moved to Commerce before finally being called off all together.
The Stephens County at Habersham Central rivalry showdown also had to be moved to a Saturday kickoff.
