TOCCOA — Jefferson kept pace with Oconee County atop the Region 8-AAAA standings after taking a big 6-3 road victory over Stephens County Monday night
The two teams will resume their three game series Wednesday in Jefferson.
Brandon Trefren got the win for the Dragons (12-5, 3-1 Region 8-AAAA) allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out four. Logan Garner got the save pitching two perfect innings, fanning three of the six batters he faced.
Stephens County (11-8, 1-3) took the initial lead with a run in the first. Jefferson answered with two runs in the second and another in the third.
After the Indians cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the third, Jefferson plated three in the fourth. Stephens County trimmed the lead to 6-3 in the fifth but could get no closer.
Billy Finch, Justin Cole, Lane Watkins, Chaz Evans, Carter Evans, Vinny Farley and Kasen Rainey each had one hit for the Dragons. Cole had two RBI and Zac Corbin, Finch, Chaz Evans, and Rainey had one RBI apiece for Jefferson.
Kooper Briley had two hits and one RBI to lead Stephens County. Gabe White took the loss for the Indians allowing six runs on six hits in three innings. Dawson Sorrells pitched well in relief yielding just one hit and striking out three in four innings of work.
