LAWRENCEVILLE — Archer did just enough to fend off Mill Creek in the regular season.
The Tigers did so again in Friday's state playoffs.
Archer forced two tunovers inside its own territory in the fourth quarter to hold on to a 16-10 win over the Hawks in the second round of the Class AAAAAAA bracket.
Mill Creek saw its bid for a third straight state semifinal appearance come to an end after the Tigers took a 10-0 first quarter lead. The Hawks (8-4) got a two-yard touchdown run from Caden Cullins in the second quarter to pull within 10-7 and then pulled within 16-10 on Matt Campbell's 52-yard field goal in the third quarter.
The Hawks moved as close as the Archer 8-yard line in the fourth quarter only to have a pass intercepted. Mill Creek also fumbled the ball away inside the Archer 19 in the fourth, as it gave the ball away four times on the night.
Uriah Leverette rushed 20 times for 83 yards for the Hawks, while Brady Longenecker added 53 yards on eight carries. Longenecker also completed 12 of 20 passes for 133 yards.
Mill Creek's season is now complete.
