Clarkesville police identify victims of double shooting

CLARKESVILLE — More details have been released about an altercation that ended in two people dying from gunshot wounds in Clarkesville Saturday night.

“After initial preliminary investigation, it is believed that a domestic altercation had taken place between a male, James Robert Goeslin, and a female, Carol Ann Brown, 54,” Clarkesville Police Chief Brad Barrett said by telephone Sunday afternoon. “The investigation revealed that Carol Ann Brown sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the temporal cranium sometime during the altercation in question. The investigation also revealed that Goeslin suffered what appears to be a self-inflicted fatal gunshot wound to the cranium.”

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene at 759 Davis Place Drive, Clarkesville, at 8:49 p.m. Saturday, locating the deceased victims in the yard.

Once the scene was secured by law enforcement personnel from Clarkesville, Demorest and Habersham County, officers secured the area and obtained a search warrant for the premises, according to a written statement from Barrett.

“A .40-caliber handgun was located at the scene, recovered, and subsequently taken into custody as evidence by law enforcement personnel,” Barrett said.

Brown lived at the address, and Barrett said officers were told she and Goeslin had been in a relationship.

“Forensic processing of the scene was conducted by Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Scene Specialist personnel, as well as Clarkesville Police Department investigative personnel,” Barrett said. “The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will continue to assist Clarkesville Police Department and the Habersham County Coroner's Office with this incident. Both deceased parties will undergo a complete autopsy by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Division of Forensic Sciences.”

Barrett said no further details are immediately available, and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with knowledge about the incident is asked to contact Clarkesville Police Department at (706) 754-5390.
