NGMC Braselton says baby boy is first baby born at new L&D unit

Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Braselton officials estimate some 675 babies will be born in the hospital's new Labor & Delivery Unit in its first year. If the first day of operation was any indication, the hospital is well on its way to meeting that number.

The new unit opened Monday and the first baby born arrived at 10:03 a.m.

Dr. Clayton Cox, an obstetrician with Northeast Georgia Physicians Group OB/GYN, delivered the baby boy.

“It is always exciting to care for a mother and her new baby, but this birth – the first in the beautiful new NGMC Braselton unit – is very special,” said Cox.  “We’re proud to start a new chapter for NGMC and offer mothers the option of delivering in this community.”

Weighing seven pounds, 15 ounces, Lucas Arthur Herndon was delivered by cesarean section to parents Sara and Kyle Herndon.  The Herndons moved to Braselton just six weeks ago, according to information released by the hospital.

“Everyone at NGMC Braselton has been wonderful during the delivery and recovery,” said Sara Herndon.  “We love Dr. Cox, all of the staff have been so great and the facility is amazing!”

The new Labor & Delivery unit, which will serve parents in Hall, Gwinnett, Barrow and Jackson counties, features 10 modern labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum (LDRP) rooms – allowing mothers the comfort of staying in the same room throughout their visit.  Each room features four-inch memory foam mattresses, private bathrooms with hydrotherapy showers and large windows allowing plenty of light.

The unit also has a family waiting area, two cesarean section suites, on-site lactation consultants and a Level II Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit (NICU) for babies needing a little extra care.

Dr. Cox delivered a second baby- Isaac Caudillo- just after noon, and a third mother was admitted to the unit on Monday as well.
