Banks County notches first win under Shoemaker in shootout

By AccessWDUN Staff

OAKWOOD — The Banks County football team used an explosive and balanced offensive attack to notch its first win under head coach Josh Shoemaker on Friday.

Griffin Goodwin passed for 249 yards and Clayton Dykehouse rushed for 245 yards, as the Leopards took out Johnson 54-35 in Oakwood.

"I'm proud of our kids; they came out of the gate rolling on offense," Shoemaker said. "It's also a dream come true for me to get that first win as a head coach. And you've got to get your kids believing. Hopefully this will go a long way toward that. It wasa  total team effort, and I'm especially proud of the offensive line."

Goodwin piled up five touchdowns in the win, while Dykehouse provided three scores -- though Shoemaker noted that Banks' defense needs improvement.

"We didn't tackle well," Shoemaker said. "We also had 19-20 penalties. That's way too many mistakes we've got a lot to clean up."

Yet Banks County (1-2) will have a bye week to do so before taking on Union County on Sept. 16.

Johnson was led by quarterback Sam Corbett, who rushed for 78 yards, as the Knights (0-3) put up 204 yards on the ground and 192 through the air. Fernando Ruiz and AT Young each provided first half scores for Johnson, while Chandler Barkley, Kylan Curry and Young all added second half scores for the Knights.

Johnson will travel to East Hall next week.
