Boaters asked to stay out of section of Lake Rabun after 'significant boating accident'

UPDATED: Nearly a dozen people escaped injury Sunday night in an incident that resulted in a boat sinking on Lake Rabun, according to Mark McKinnon of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division.

Rabun County Fire Services officials are continuing to ask all boaters to stay out of the Big Basin area of Lake Rabun after what they're calling a "significant boating accident on Lake Rabun this evening."

McKinnon said the incident occurred at the end of Sunday night's fireworks show on the lake.

"Georgia DNR Rangers and the Rabun County fire boat responded to a sunken vessel call on Lake Rabun after the fireworks display tonight," McKinnon said via email. "The officers were working the fireworks event when they received a call that a ski boat with 11 occupants was swamped as all the boats were leaving at the end of the fireworks show. All of the vessel's occupants were account for and were uninjured."

McKinnon had no other immediate information about the boat or its occupants.
