Hall County Health Department announces schedule for back-to-school vaccines

The Hall County Health Department is reminding all parents that now is a good time to get those required school vaccinations.

In Georgia, children entering kindergarten, middle school and high school are required to have certain vaccinations.

Public Information Officer / Risk Communicator
District 2 Public Health, Dave Palmer said families are often busy in the summer, so officials put out the reminder.

"A lot of folks may choose to get their children vaccinated at their pediatrician, and that's fine, we just want to encourage parents to go ahead now and start thinking about getting those vaccinations completed before school," Palmer said.

The health department will be giving school immunizations during a period beginning Tuesday.

"We look at it like buying supplies for school. You don't go to school without your pens and paper, and we want to make sure that everybody is up to date on their vaccines before school starts," Palmer said.

Most healthcare providers use a system called GRITS, or the Georgia Registry for Immunization Transactions, according to Palmer.

"If their children are in that system, we can know what shots they have had and the ones they need. If they're from out of state, they're not from Georgia, then it would be wise to bring the shot record with the child," Palmer said.

He also said if parents aren't sure if their child is in the system, they should also bring vaccination records.
