Buford moved one step closer to defending its Class AAAA state title while Gainesville and Jackson County both will have to play deciding Game 3s after splitting their best-of-three series Tuesday.
The Wolves swept Cartersville at home, 6-5 and 10-3, behind a resurgent offense that has scored 61 runs in six playoff games. They await the winner of the St. Pius-Eastside series, which will be decided on Wednesday after the two split Tuesday's doubleheader.
Gainesville is trying to get back to the Class AAAAA title series after falling to Greenbrier last season. The Red Elephants split a pair of games with Dalton at Ivey-Watson Field.
Gainesville will take on Dalton at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday in its deciding Game 3 with Region 2-AAAAA champion Houston County, which swept Columbus in their quarterfinal matchup, awaiting the winner.
Jackson County is trying to make history in Class AAA and needs one more win after splitting with Ringgold. The Panthers are looking for their first-ever trip to the semifinals.
Jackson County will take on Ringgold at 5 p.m. on Wednesday in in its deciding Game 3 with defending champion Blessed Trinity waiting in the semifinals after the Titans blanked Franklin County 10-0 and 5-0.
Meanwhile, Union County saw its season come to an end at the hands of Lovett in a two-game sweep in Blairsville. The Panthers battled till the end in Game 1 before falling 4-3 but then suffered a 12-2 loss in Game 2.
Region 8-AAAAA, which had three teams advance to the quarterfinals, could still make up half of the Final Four in Class AAAAA if the Red Elephants can move through. No. 3 seed Loganville advanced to the semifinals with a sweep of Kell. The Red Devils are the only team left in Class AAAAA that swept through each of the first three rounds.
