Gwinnett Police offer reward for location of rape suspect

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

Gwinnett County Police are offering a reward of up to $2,000 in exchange for information to help locate a man they believe sexually assaulted a mentally handicapped woman in Duluth earlier this month.

According to a press release from the Gwinnett County Police Department, 22-year-old Jamaal Lamont Cooke is wanted on charges of rape, aggravated sodomy and felony obstruction stemming from the April 23 incident. Police say an 18-year-old female with the mental capacity of a 10-year-old was assaulted while visiting the Paramount Apartments complex in Duluth with a friend.

Detectives found Cooke, the primary suspect, at the same complex two days later but he fled on foot when they tried to arrest him. Police say Cooke does not own a vehicle and has an "extensive criminal history" in Gwinnett County and metro Atlanta.

Anyone with information leading to Cooke's location is asked to call Gwinnett authorities at 770-513-5300. Those who want to submit information anonymously can contact Crime Stoppers Atlanta by calling 404-577-TIPS (8477) or by visiting their website.
