The children in the Boys and Girls Club at Melrose Apartments have a green thumb – and blue, pink and purple thumbs.
In preparation for their coming spring and summer garden, about 24 of them spent an afternoon recently painting old tires to form a border around the garden. They also filled planter boxes with topsoil and flowers to spruce the outdoor classroom area a bit.
They plan to plant watermelon, peppers, tomatoes and other edibles.
The gardeners are residents of Melrose Apartments, which is part of the Gainesville Housing Authority.
