Brenau University is leaving Kings Bay this spring after almost 30 years.
The college no longer meets the requirements to have their campus on the Naval submarine base, said spokesman David Morrison.
"After about 29 years operating there, the organization that oversees all of the higher education institutes that operate on Navy or military bases basically changed its regulations in the last year or so that seemed to favor larger institutions," said Morrison. "The officials that manage Kings Bay decided to honor those new regulations and as a result, we did not renew our contract when it expired this year."
Brenau, which is based in Gainesville, is not planning another campus in Camden at the moment. The college recently established a school in Jacksonville, Fla. within the past year.
"We had no plans to leave down there. The opening of the Jacksonville campus was just to broaden our offerings in the area," said Morrison. We are absolutely committed to serving the military population in South Georgia and North Florida and will continue to do so."
Morrison said with the small staff at Kings Bay, the net loss was only one job with the closure, which included some retirements and other changes.
Brenau will hold its last commencement ceremony in May and then shut down the college at Kings Bay. Students currently in the Kings Bay program may transfer to Jacksonville, Fla. or any of Brenau's other campuses with the same tuition rate.
Two schools will replace Brenau and Valdosta State University at Kings Bay, which is also ceasing operations on the base, but names of the schools have not been announced yet.
