DAHLONEGA — University of North Georgia director of athletics Lindsay Reeves announced on Tuesday the addition of women's track & field to the University's sport offerings beginning with competition in the 2016-17 season, bringing the school's offerings to 13 intercollegiate sports.
"It is an exciting opportunity to add track and field to the North Georgia sports lineup," stated Reeves. "The new program will enhance the championship experience for both current and prospective student-athletes."
Women's cross country coach Tom Williams will serve as the head coach for the new program, while also maintaining his leadership role with the Nighthawk cross country team.
"Since reinstating the women's cross country program in 2012 after a two-year hiatus, we always knew the natural progression would be to bring in track & field student-athletes and continue the growth of our running program," said Williams. "The addition of track and field as a sport offering will provide us the ability to develop student-athletes year-round here at North Georgia.
North Georgia becomes the 10th women's Division II track & field program in the state of Georgia.
The Nighthawks will begin to compete next season with Alabama-Huntsville, Augusta, Clayton State, Columbus State, Florida Tech, Montevallo, Nova Southeastern, Shorter and UNC Pembroke for the Peach Belt Conference championship.
An initial track and field organizational meeting for current UNG students will be forthcoming.
