Baseball: Critical day on tap for several area teams

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter

BUFORD — Wednesday could be a pivotal day for a pair of region races in prep baseball action.

Class AAAA No. 2 Buford will take on No. 8 Madison County at Gerald McQuaig Field in what will be a battle for first place in Region 8-AAAA. The Wolves suffered their first region loss to the Red Raiders on Monday -- 9-8 in Danielsville -- and another loss to Madison County would put them one-game behind and with the Red Raiders owning the tiebreakers. North Hall, which has slipped to fourth place, travels to Johnson trying to keep pace for a playoff spot.

In Region 8-AAAAA, No. 1 Gainesville travels to Winder-Barrow with a chance to sweep the Bulldoggs and keep pace with No. 3 Loganville. The Red Elephants are tied with Loganville, who takes on next-to-last place Discovery, atop the standings. Lanier, which has climbed into fifth place, travels to Apalachee.

In Region 8-A, Lakeview Academy plays host to Class A No. 1 Hebron Christian with a chance to hand the Lions their first region loss of the season.
