DEMOREST — The Piedmont College softball team upended defending USA South regular season champion and preseason favorite Averett University Sunday sweeping the Cougars. Piedmont won a close one 3-0 in game one before ending it early in the sixth 11-3 in game two.

Game one was a scoreless contest until Jessica Bagwell hit a two-run blast in the fourth inning putting Piedmont ahead 2-0. The Lady Lions tacked on another run in the sixth inning on a wild pitch making it 3-0 for the final.

Sarah Walker held the Cougars to just seven hits and no runs scored while walking just three batters and striking out four. Walker picked up the win moving her record to 10-4 before entering in relief in game two and picking up her second win of the day making her 11-4 in the circle this season.

Game two was all Cougars to start as the defending USA South regular season champs led it 1-0 with a run in the top of the first until the Lady Lions tied it at 1 after four complete. Starter Melissa Eckman tossed 4.1 innings allowing the first of two runs in the top of the fifth as the Cougars led it 3-1 heading to the bottom of the frame.

The Lady Lions pulled together and put up five in the bottom of the fifth and another five in the bottom of the sixth to end it early on the mercy rule with 10 runs on 10 hits and two errors in those two innings. The final hit of the game belonged to none other than Bagwell who hit a bases-clearing triple to left center field sending the Lady Lions away with the victory.
