DAHLONEGA — The 15th-ranked University of North Georgia baseball team opened up a three-game non-conference series with visiting Carson-Newman with an 11-2 victory on Friday afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium. The Nighthawks provided starter Brandon Agar with offensive support fueled by 10 hits and seven walks.
Agar gave up a first inning home run to Ryan Addington as C-N took an early 1-0 lead, but the senior settled down to strike out seven and record his first victory of the season.
A pair of doubles from Sam Tidaback and Trevor Sams in the bottom of the frame highlighted a four-run inning for the Nighthawks and gave Agar all the run support he would need.
Steven Tomlinson pounded a two-run home run in the third to extend the North Georgia lead to 7-1.
Tidaback led the Nighthawk offense going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored.
North Georgia's Derrick Pickvet collected the rare three-inning save after tossing the final three frames, as the freshman surrendered zero runs on just two hits.
Agar picked up his 17th career victory allowing just two runs in six innings of work.
Trevor Sams added a 2-for-5 day from the plate with a run scored and a RBI.
The game marked the third of a season-opening seven-game homestand for the Nighthawks.
The same two teams square off in game two of the series tomorrow (Feb. 5) with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m
