Mill Creek shuts down Newton, surges into next round

By AccessWDUN Staff

HOSCHTON — Mill Creek's defense spent the regular season shutting down opposing offenses -- so why change anything now in the playoffs?

The Hawks stuck to their usual gameplan on Friday, holding Newton to just 59 total yards en route to a 41-0 first round Class AAAAAAA victory in Hoschton.

Mill Creek quarterback Cameron Turley also continued his assault on the Hawks record books, completing 9 of 19 passes for 136 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. The four scores tied his own program record fom earlier this season and also pushed him into first place for career scoring passes with 24 (the old record was 21).

Turley started the scoring on a 13-yard pass to Ace Williams and added second quarter touchdowns to Preston Norwood and Trey Turner. Norwood finished the game with three receptions for 49 yards and two touchdowns, including another TD in the third quarter for the top-ranked Hawks (11-0).

Brenton King also had two first quarter field goals -- 35 and 39 yards -- while Victor Heyward picked off a Newton pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown to round out the scoring.

Mill Creek -- which needed just 208 yards of offense on the night -- moves on to the second round where it will play host to Cherokee.
