Lakeview Academy students, others work together for 2nd-grade cancer survivor

By AccessWDUN staff

At Academy Sports in Gainesville Friday, a Lakeview Academy 2nd-grader, who is also a cancer survivor, will be presented with a custom-fitted basketball goal and post.

Addie Bailes has had several operations to replace the leg bone where her cancer occurred. The first bone died and a second operation and bone graft was needed this past summer. She must stay off her leg for several months and has been using a wheelchair while at school.

Lakeview Academy’s Featherbone Communiversity students were given a $5 challenge. They were each given $5 and instructed to grow the money. They knew that Addie is an athlete who loves to play basketball. So they decided to purchase a basketball goal and post short enough for her to shoot to from her wheelchair.

The students pooled their money and gave it to Kona Ice to attend one of Lakeview’s local events. Kona Ice, in turn, gave all the proceeds from the night to Academy Sports to purchase a basketball goal and post. Academy Sports shortened the post so that Addie can shoot to it from her wheelchair.
