SPRINGFIELD, Ga. - Officials say a high school in southeast Georgia will continue using the name "Rebels" but will make sure that its sports uniforms do not depict a Confederate soldier.
The Savannah Morning News reports (http://bit.ly/1Lvuukr) that more than 530 people attended an Aug. 18 school board meeting, where the NAACP asked the board to remove the symbols from the high school.
School officials say they plan to use an "E'' on athletic uniforms rather than a caricature of a Confederate soldier.
School Superintendent Randy Shearouse tells the Savannah newspaper that he doesn't anticipate any other action being taken on the topic — at least not anytime soon.
