PEACHTREE CITY — North Georgians are expected to get a break from the heat today but may have to put up with some severe storms, while to the south, another heat advisory is in place.
The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Peachtree City says highs today across most of north Georgia are not expected to get out of the 80s - a sharp contrast to the low- to mid-90s that have prevailed for several days. The forecast high in Gainesville today is 84 with a 60 percent chance of rain. That would be the coolest high since July 3 when a 79 was recorded at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport.
But with the break in the temperatures comes the possibility of some strong thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.
According to an NWS Facebook posting, north Georgia and parts of central Georgia will be under the gun from noon 'til about 10:00 tonight for "isolated severe storms (producing) damaging winds, frequent lightning, and locally heavy rainfall."
Temperatures in Gainesville are expected to remain in the 80s through Saturday, before a return to the 90s on Sunday, with readings holding in the 90s through Wednesday. There's a 40 percent chance of more rain tomorrow but then little or no rainfall is expected again until Wednesday.
Meanwhile, central Georgia and parts of south Georgia can expect another round of above normal temperatures this afternoon and heat indices of 102-109 in some places and a few degrees less than that in others.
