Charges pending in chase that reached 140 mph

COMER - The Georgia State Patrol is taking warrants after a high-speed chase through Madison and Clarke counties Saturday night.

Comer Police Chief Dennis Bell said his officers were set up with license plate readers on a side road when a black Kia Forte approached and suddenly turned around and left the area at a high rate of speed at 8:14 p.m.

The Comer officers attempted to stop the vehicle. Those officers notified the Madison County Sheriff's Office and troopers from Georgia State Patrol Post 32 in Athens.

The fleeing vehicle at one point stopped for one of the officers, Bell said. As the officer exited his patrol car, the driver fled again.

Bell said troopers took over the chase.

Bell said the fleeing vehicle traveled at more than 120 mph through the intersection of Glen Carey Road and Georgia 72 in Hull.

Chase speeds reached as high as 130 to 140 mph, and the chase lasted 13 to 16 miles, and involved a total of six to seven officers, Bell said.

The pursuit traveled along Georgia 98/Georgia 72 across the intersection of U.S. 29 at Georgia 72 at more than 100 mph, Bell said.

Fortunately, there were no collisions during the course of the chase.

Officers located the vehicle at North Avenue Comfort Suites in Athens, but the driver was gone.

"We do know who he is, and GSP will be taking charges on him," Bell said.
