Clarkesville moving forward with redevelopment proposals

CLARKESVILLE - Two firms have submitted proposals to redevelop part of the fire-damaged east side of the Clarkesville Square.

Following about a 40-minute closed meeting during its work session Thursday night, the Clarkesville City Council agreed to allow Kirby Glaze of 4PM to interview the two firms before making a recommendation on which contractor to utilize for redevelopment of the city-owned buildings.

Tentatively those interviews will be conducted Friday, June 26, with 4PM officials making a recommendation to the city council during its meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, July 6.

Three firms qualified to submit proposals for the redevelopment, but only two actually did so by the deadline Wednesday.

Those firms include Blake Rainwater & Associates of Habersham County and John W. Spratlin and Son LLC of Lincolnton. BMK of Jackson County qualified but did not submit a bid proposal by the deadline.

Mayor Terry Greene discussed the bid proposals from the two contractors.

"They're very similar in price and scope," Greene said. "I guess the question is what are the differences. They're both very similar, but there's got to be a few differences that separate one group from the other. That's what our consultants are going to help us sort out."

Once the interviews are completed with the two firms, consultants from 4PM will present a recommendation to be voted on by the council at its meeting July 6.
