Forum to address ills of teen sexting and social media misuse

GAINESVILLE - Hall County Family Connection Network and Partners are hoping to offer parents a glimpse into the consequences of social media misuse and sexting in a forum next Tuesday.

Sexting is defined as sending someone sexually explicit photographs or messages via text messages.

Sponsored by the Hall County Family Connection Network and Partners, Eyes Wide Open, sexting and social media; how to protect your teen, will include several expert panelists.

"In speaking with out school administrators, our teachers, law enforcement and juvenile court judges, it seem that teens and parents may not be fully aware of all of the laws and consequences regarding  social media misuse and texting," Elizabeth Fielden of Hall County Family Connection Network said.

While prohibition would keep teenagers out of trouble with social media or text messaging, Fielden said that's just not realistic.

"Actually, social media I think, can be very useful and even educational when used properly.  I think that the key is empowering parents with knowledge and information regarding social media and also the laws and emotional consequences of misusing social media," Fielden said.

In addition to the education aspect, Fielden said panelists will also offer tips for parents on monitoring their teenagers' electronic devices.

Panelists for the event include Betty Guilfoile of the Children’s Center for Hope and Healing, Gainesville Police Cpl. Kevin Holbrook, Valerie Simmons-Walston of Brenau University and Hall County Solicitor General Stephanie Woodard.

Anmarie Martin, a motivational speaker and community activist, will moderate the forum.

Fielden said her goals for the event are simple.

"I definitely hope that through increasing awareness, and providing parents and teens with this knowledge we eventually see an overall decrease in incidents referred to school officials, law enforcement and juvenile court."

Eyes Wide Open, sexting and social media; how to protect your teen is scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19, at Brenau University in Gainesville.  The forum will be in the Jacobs Building at 340 Green Street.
