Baseball: GHS belts 7 HRs in rout of Apalachee

BETHLEHEM -- Michael Curry led an offensive explosion for the Gainesville baseball team Wednesday.

Gainesville will close out the regular season at home on Friday against Apalachee. The Red Elephants are locked in a battle for second place with Winder-Barrow.

Curry belted a grand slam and also had a two-run home run to lead the Red Elephants to a 17-7 shellacking of Apalachee in Region 8-AAAAA action.

Gainesville smacked seven home runs in all. Caleb Whitenton and Jonathan Gettys also hit two home runs apiece and Brandon Sewell had a solo home run for the Red Elephnats (19-5, 14-3 Region 8-AAAAA).

Gainesville jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning but Apalachee fought back to tie the game at 4 in the third off starter Caleb Whitenton, who lasted just 2 1/3 innings. The Red Elephants retook the lead 5-4 in the fourth and then exploded for 10 runs in the fifth inning.

Senior Mikey Gonzalez earned the win on the hill for Gainesville pitching 1 2/3 innings allowing just one hit and no runs.

Whitenton also had a double and three RBI. Gettys finished with four RBI for Gainesville.
