ATLANTA - The Georgia chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) recently hosted its 11th annual statewide law enforcement banquet, Golden Shield Honors, in Atlanta. With these awards, MADD recognizes law enforcement officials who stop drunk drivers, prevent underage drinking, and support victims of drunk driving crimes.
Five members of the Georgia Department of Public Safety were awarded with the top honors at this year’s banquet.
- Officer DUI Hero: TFC Scott Tarpley (287 DUI arrests)
Awarded to the officer with the highest total of DUI arrests for 2014.
- Agency DUI Hero: Post 6, Gainesville (415 DUI arrests)
Awarded to the agency with the highest total of DUI arrests for 2014.
- CMV Officer Of The Year: MCO3 William Buchanan
Awarded to a CMV officer who has excelled in many areas, including DUI arrest, traffic safety, DUI victim services, underage drinking prevention, work ethic, etc.
- Georgia State Patrol Post of the Year: Post 25, Grovetown (*3rd consecutive win)
Awarded to the post that has demonstrated excellence in implementing innovative techniques in the detections and deterrence of traffic violations, DUI, and underage drinking prevention.
- HEAT/DUI Taskforce: Nighthawks North
Awarded to a H.E.A.T. unit that has demonstrated excellence in education and enforcement of drunk driving and aggressive traffic and has been successful in reducing the number of crashes, fatalities and injuries on the highways.
In addition, several other DPS members received MADD Georgia DUI Achievement Pins for their 2014 DUI arrests totals and Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) Program pins.
