BUFORD — Martin Mangram may one day be a rocket scientist -- literally.
The Buford High senior hopes to major in aeorspace engineering in college, and, frankly, the Wolves' standout running back looked a little bit like a jet fighter on Friday, knifing through the Woodward Academy defense as he helped lead Buford's surge back into the state championship game.
Mangram rushed 15 times for 119 yards and 3 touchdowns, as the Wolves fought back from an 18-7 deficit to seal a 35-18 victory in the Class AAAA semifinals and push Buford back into the state championship game for ninth straight year.
Now, Mangram and his teammates must wait till Saturday to see if they can notch their fourth straight state title and eighth in those nine years. They will take on Cartersville -- last year's semifinal opponent -- in the Georgia Dome, looking to match their own state record (tied with West Rome) four straight championships (2007-10).
If they are to do so you can be sure Mangram will play a key role. The senior is one of many weapons bristling in the Wolves backfield, leading Buford with 106 carries for 770 yards and 25 touchdowns.
AccessWDUN sports editor Morgan Lee recently caught up with Mangram to talk about his big night and Buford's run for another crown. To watch the interview, simply click "play" in the video box above.
