DAHLONEGA - One man's trash is another man's treasure. The University of North Georgia (UNG) is hosting a community event tonight from 6:30-9:00, displaying several items from its library's special collection and artifacts that showcase the history of Lumpkin County.
The event, From the Attic to the Archives, will feature memorabilia and objects related to the renovation of Price Memorial Hall, as well as documents and notes from 19th and 20th century author Andrew W. Cain, who penned a book about Lumpkin County's first 100 years. Cain, who was born in Dahlonega, is considered to be one of the first historians of Lumpkin County.
"This event is a good chance to expose our faculty, students and community to some of the fascinating exhibits that we have here at UNG," said Allison Galloup, special collections and digital initiatives librarian.
The guest speaker is Dr. William Balco, UNG assistant professor of anthropology. He is currently involved in the ongoing study of the High Trestle Bridge, which was constructed in 1859 and measures 240 feet high and spans more than 1,000 feet across Yahoola Creek.
Several members of The Lumpkin County Historical Society will also be present to lend some expertise and bring their unique perspective on the materials presented.
"Our society is focused on presenting, protecting and preserving this area's rich historical heritage," said Chris Worick, president of the Lumpkin County Historical Society. "We are extremely interested in sharing that history, and are pleased to lend our expertise and support of UNG's archive event."
The event will also feature a "pop-up museum" that will display items brought in by the general public. Participants are encouraged to bring family memorabilia such as old photos, letters or even items found while digging, such as arrows, pottery, keys and bottles.
It will be held in the David Potter Special Collections Room at UNG's Library Technology Center in Dahlonega.
