Sawnee EMC Foundation awards scholarship

By AccessWDUN staff

CUMMING - Sawnee Electric Membership Foundation has awarded its first Brian Johnson Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship, which was established by the Foundation in May and is limited to students participating in the Technical College System of Georgia’s Electrical Lineworker Program, is being awarded to Jacob Brooks of Dawsonville.

The Electrical Lineworker Program Scholarship was developed to honor the legacy of one of Sawnee EMC’s employees, Brian Johnson, who lost his life in the line of duty in January 2015. “We wanted to establish this unique program to provide assistance to deserving students who need assistance, and to recognize our former employee, Brian Johnson, and the school he attended," said Michael A. Goodroe, President and CEO of Sawnee EMC.

Brooks will receive $500 from the Sawnee Foundation in support of his continuing education to achieve his line worker certification from North Georgia Technical College in Clarksville.  All of the funds for the program come from donations.

“Brian loved the outdoors.  He was not the type of person who could work inside for a living.  When he attended the Electrical Lineworker Program he gave it 110% because he knew that it would lead him to a career with a company such as Sawnee EMC.  He lived life to the fullest, always with a contagious smile that he would share with the world.  Brian touched more lives in 27 years than most do in a lifetime.  It is an honor to his memory that this scholarship has been established so that our son can continue to touch lives of those who are choosing a career he loved.”   Dave, Dorothy, Matthew and Michael Johnson

The staff at North Georgia Technical College and the staff of Sawnee EMC have worked together to identify recipients, and additional awards will be made in the coming months.
