OAKWOOD – At a meeting Monday night, Oakwood City Council voted unanimously to rezone a 12.76-acre tract of land on Poplar Springs Road to allow a townhome community to be built.
The property began preparations for construction back in 2006, but due to a downturn in the economy the builders abandoned the project.
“They had put in water lines, sewer lines and streets with curbing and guttering,” said Oakwood Mayor Lamar Scroggs. "When the economy went down, it got to a point where they couldn’t proceed finishing it out.”
The rezoning from a Multiple Family Residential District (R-4) to a Planned Residential Development (PRD) allows a new builder to come in and create a townhome community.
The new development of 108 townhomes will include additional parking and sidewalks built throughout the development. Those conditions were proposed by the Oakwood Planning Commission and agreed upon by the landowners. The planned development will be built across the road from Johnson High School.
The landowners/developers have not yet hired a builder for the development.
Other Business:
- Oakwood City Council adopts a 4.0 milage rate. The rate is the same as last year. The final reading of the rate is next Monday night.
- Oakwood City Council voted unanimously to amend its city code to prohibit urban camping and solicitation.
