DAHLONEGA — The University of North Georgia will welcome 17 NCAA Division II teams on Oct. 5-6 as the Nighthawks play host to the second UNG Fall Invitational men's golf tournament at Achasta Golf Club.
The 54-hole event kicks off on Monday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on the par 72, 6,967 yard Jack Nicklaus signature golf course.
Despite recent local heavy rain, the course remains playable as all 17 teams worked through their practice rounds on Sunday afternoon.
Home to the University of North Georgia men's and women's golf teams, Achasta Golf Club is located just a few short miles from the Dahlonega campus. This natural, classic golf course blends harmoniously with its surroundings, located in the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains along the Chestatee River with the river coming into play on over half the holes.
Achasta was home of the PGA Tour's 2007-2008 AT&T Classic Qualifier, 2002-2006 Bell South Classic Open Qualifier, 2002 Georgia State Amateur Qualifier, 2003 US Open Qualifier and the 2004 Georgia State Mid-Am Qualifier.
Almost a third of the UNG Fall Invitational field is ranked in the top-25 in the latest Bushnell Golfweek Division II Coaches' Poll (Sept. 25). Columbus State (No. 12), West Georgia (No. 15), Georgia Southwestern (No. 19), Georgia College (No. 23) and Lee (No. 25) are each ranked in the latest poll.
Lander, Young Harris, Carson-Newman, North Georgia, Newberry and Catawba also garnered votes in the poll.
Additionally, nine of the 17 teams are ranked in the top-50 in the most recent GolfStat NCAA Division II Relative Rankings.
Lander won the inaugural event in 2014 while C-N's Nick Kennedy won the individual title in a sudden death playoff.
