OAKWOOD -- Tony Lotti isn't about to start celebrating yet -- but the West Hall football coach has to admit he likes what he's seen so far from his Spartans.

West Hall posted its second straight shutout victory on Friday in Oakwood, blanking Chestatee 31-0 thanks in large part to a dominating defense that allowed just 90 total yards to the visitors.

"I am proud of the defense, however it's only two ballgames. Every week it's going to get harder. Can we play the same disciplined defense?" Lotti said. "I'm happy for our kids, I'm happy for our student section and our parents, but it's a long season, and we've got to keep getting better."

It took the Spartans (2-0) some time to break through on Friday, but once Cameron Millsap's five-yard scoring run put West Hall in front it seemed as though the Spartans only got stronger.

That proved especially true on the line of scrimmage, where West Hall opened up holes for its running game while denying the War Eagles (0-2) any room. The Spartans rushed for 329 yards, with 10 players getting carries -- led by Tyquan Statham's 104 yards on eight carries. Kwon Williams added 72 yards on eight carries, and Tyrese Osborne finished with 61 yards on six touches.

"What I saw was everybody playing together," Lotti said. "Everybody just played hard together; there was no selfishness. We've still got a long way to go, but the steps are going in the right direction."

Osborne also added two touchdowns, his first coming on a three-yard run in the second quarter for a 14-0 West Hall advantage. By the time he added a 31-yard jaunt in the third quarter, the Spartans were cruising toward the victory.

Statham also chipped in with a 26-yard run in the third quarter before Bradley Hodgson rounded out the scoring with a 30-yard field goal with 7:30 left to play.

West Hall will look to continue its strong start next week against North Hall -- a challenge Lotti says his team must be prepared for.

"They're a good team; look at the tradition they've got, and I know they'll come in here ready to win," Lotti said. "The four Class AAAA teams we're playing up front this season is to get us ready for the region."

Chestatee, meanwhile, will travel to face Pepperell next week.
