SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- As colder weather approaches, police in coastal Georgia are warning drivers against leaving their cars unattended with the keys inside while their vehicle warms up.
Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Capt. DeVonn Adams said in a statement that each year as the weather gets colder, auto thefts increase because drivers begin leaving cars idling with heaters on to warm them up.

Police say drivers who are commonly targeted by car thieves are parents who are preparing to take children to school but leave the car running with the keys inside.
Police Chief Julie Tolbert says authorities understand that leaving cars idling is a matter of convenience for many drivers. But police warn drivers that it could take only seconds for a thief to take advantage of the opportunity.
